  • Gomułka's "Zionist" speech

    On 19 June 1967 Władysław Gomułka, first secretary of the Polish communist party, delivers a speech condemning the activities of the "Zionists" in the People's Republic of Poland. This signals the start of the anti-Semitic campaign directed by a faction of communist nationalists (known as the partisans), led by Minister of Internal Affairs General Mieczysław Moczar. In 1967-70, over 12,000 people of Jewish ancestry leave communist Poland.

  • Arrest of Archbishop Josef Beran of Prague

    19 June 1949 marks the arrest of Archbishop Josef Beran of Prague. This year the majority of Czech and Slovak bishops are arrested. Many of them remain in prison until 1963.
