- Beginning of strike in Gdansk shipyard
After a food-price hike, strikes in the Gdansk shipyard broke out, led by Lech Wałęsa. The following events were to result in the organizing and the growth of the Trade Union Solidarność (Solidarity) which gained national and international fame and was to play a major role in bringing about the communist downfall in Poland.
- Day of Restoration of Independence in Estonia
On 20 August 1991, Estonia declared formal independence during the Soviet military coup attempt in Moscow, reconstituting the pre-1940 state. The Soviet Union recognised the independence of Estonia on 6 September 1991. The first country to diplomatically recognise Estonia's reclaimed independence was Iceland.
