- Initiative for Peace and Human Rights founded in GDR
On this day in 1986, the Initiative for Peace and Human Rights (Initiative Frieden und Menschenrechte) was founded in the GDR as one of the first organisations addressing human rights in the GDR. It published the underground periodical Grenzfall.
- International Holocaust Remembrance Day
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a memorial day for the victims of the Holocaust. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly resolution in 2005. The date 27 January was chosen as on this day in 1945 the largest Nazi death camp - Auschwitz-Birkenau - was liberated by Soviet Red Army.
