  • Removal of Robert Havemann from SED
    type: anniversary

    On 12 March 1964 prominent East German chemist and communist activist Robert Havemann is removed from the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands - SED) and the Academy of Sciences for criticising the party's policies.

  • Anschluss of Austria
    type: anniversary

    On the morning of 12 March 1938, German troops marched into Austria, starting the Anschluss (German: "union", "connection"). In fact, it was an annexation of the smaller country into Germany. The invaders were greeted with cheerful enthusiasm and no fighting took place. Hitler planned to leave Austria as a puppet state, however, the enthusiastic reception caused him to formally annex the country. The Anschluss was affirmed by controlled plebiscite of 10 April, that officially recorded a 99,7 percent approval for the annexation.

  • Letter of the 34
    type: anniversary

    "Letter of the 34", a protest by prominent Polish writers and scholars against the suppression of the freedom of speech and censorship. It was handed in to the authorities by Antoni SÅ‚onimski on 14 March 1964.

  • Establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia
    type: anniversary

    Following the annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938, Hitler announced the final stage of the annexation of the Czech Republic by establishing the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia on the 6th of March 1939, completing the dissolving of Czechoslovakia.

    First free elections to the Parliament, the House of the People, in the GDR take place on 18 March 1990.
