  • Executions at the Medininkai border post

    On 31 July 1991, the Special Purpose Police Squad (OMON) of the Ministry of the Interior of the Soviet Union murdered 7 Lithuanian customs, police, and border guard officers at Medininkai border post. Only the seriously injured customs officer Tomas Ĺ ernas survived.
    The Soviet Union did not accept Lithuania's March declaration of independence and thus viewed the border posts as illegal.

    On 31 July 1948, the non-communist president of Hungary, Zoltan Tildy, is removed from office. Hungary falls under Stalinist rule.

  • Outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising

    Every year on the 1 August Warsaw commemorates the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. The fights against Nazi occupation in Warsaw, organised by the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) started at 5 pm, 1 August 1944 and lasted for 63 days.

  • Roma Genocide Remembrance Day

    On 2 August 1944, the "Gypsy camp" at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp was liquidated. Despite resistance by the Roma, almost 3,000 men, women, and children were loaded on trucks, taken to gas chambers and exterminated. When the camp was liberated in January 1945, only 4 Roma remained alive. The fate of Roma people during the Second World War is still unknown to the general public. The facts about tens of thousands of Roma murdered in the occupied Eastern territories still call for recognition.
