Alpendistel – Magazin für antifaschistische Gedenkkultur (Magazine for Antifascist Remembrance Culture) is an annual publication issued by the Austrian remembrance organisation Alpine Peace Crossing (APC), a volunteer-run association based in Krimml, Salzburg.

The work of APC focuses on the post-1945 exodus of Jewish refugees from Europe and broader questions connected to memory, migration, and antifascist remembrance culture. At the centre of the association’s activities is the commemoration of the 1947 crossing of the Krimmler Tauern by thousands of Jewish refugees on their journey toward what is now Israel. Every year, APC honours this history through a commemorative hike in the Krimml valley.

Published annually, Alpendistel explores under-researched aspects of National Socialist and post-war history, combining scholarly research with perspectives from activists, memory institutions, and public historians. The magazine aims to make discussions on remembrance culture accessible to a broad audience while also serving as a platform for critical debate. Distributed free of charge both online and in print, the publication is available in schools, museums, universities, and archives across Austria.

To date, six issues of Alpendistel have been published, with a seventh currently in preparation. Each volume is dedicated to a distinct thematic focus connected to antifascist remembrance culture and the politics of memory.

The sixth issue of the magazine, published in 2025, is dedicated to groups persecuted under National Socialism whose suffering remained largely marginalised or neglected in post-war public memory. The volume examines the experiences of people labelled “asocial”, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other overlooked victim groups. Through essays and historical analyses, the issue explores the mechanisms of exclusion, silence, and forgetting, while also addressing the role of post-war Austria and Germany in shaping collective memory of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution.
