In 2014, the main commemoration of European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism takes place in Riga, Latvia. To mark 75 years since the signature of Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia organizes the conference “Molotov-Ribbentrop pact 75: Echoes today.”
The conference consists of several thematic blocks, among them:
Consequences of the totalitarian regime crimes nowadays: victims, occupation and its echo in today's Europe, the existing problems and future challenges
The aim of the panel will be to discuss different aspects of effects and consequences of the Totalitarian systems, especially the one of the former USSR, in the modern era, covering the victims, aggression and the echo that these crimes have created in the modern day Europe. One of the topics will be focused on the legislative framework that the European countries have implemented in criminal law level.
History digitization: a unified information space formation in Europe
The discussion will focus on the necessity and the means to creating a unified digitalization of the history in order to establish a common information space within Europe that would facilitate an undistorted understanding of the totalitarian crimes in Europe and would form a base for educating.
Molotov Ribbentrop Pact and its echoes in modern law
This panel will focus on discussing different aspects on how to mitigate the consequences and the heritage of the totalitarian crimes and will look further in the modern time threats and challenges in this regard.

After the conference, in the evening of August 23rd , participants will participate in laying the flowers at the Monument of Liberty in Riga. European Network Remembrance and Solidarity will be represented in Riga by Prof. Jan Rydel and Prof. Stefan Troebst.
