The first edition of the project “In Between? Searching for local histories in borderlands of Europe” took place from 31 March to 10 April. 24 young Europeans participated first in workshops in Warsaw and later in study visits in 4 European regions: Lubuskie region (Poland), Banská Bystrica region (Slovakia), Transylvania (Romania), and Bukovina (Ukraine).
Participants of the project were chosen in a recruitment from about 270 candidates. During the workshops in Warsaw they had a chance to get to know the tools and methods for examining and documenting the past as well as documenting oral reports and audio-visual materials concerning history.
The key part of the projects were the study visits in 4 regions of Europe, regions with complex history, inhabited by various ethnic groups: Lubuskie region in Poland, Banská Bystrica region in Slovakia, Transylvania in Romania, and Ukrainian part of Bukovina. They met the witnesses of history, families, who for decades have lived “in between” different identities, who experiences both difficulties and richness related to this state of “inbetweenness”. The project participants gathered oral history interviews, digitalized home archives and got to know the local culture.
