The travelling exhibition will remain on display in Czech capital till 12 November.
After two years of meticulous preparations, the exhibition "After the Great War. New Europe 1918-1923" had its premiere in Prague, Czech Republic on 15 October.
The display, curated by Dr Bartosz Dziewanowski-Stefańczyk and Dr Robert Żurek, is an outcome of collaboration of over 35 experts from 18 countries. It tells the story of the fascinating years of 1918-23, when upon the ruins of four old empires after the end of the First World War, a dozen or so new countries appeared, almost all borders were redrawn, and societies were re-shaped or built anew. A so-called New Europe was established.
The exhibition was opened by Prof. Piotr Gliński, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Minister of Culture and National Heritage. In his speech, Minister Gliński pointed out how the exhibition's narration managed to showcase different perspectives in an attempt to convey the complexity of the discussed time period. "I hope that thanks to its appealing architectural and easthetic form, this multidimensional story about the difficulties of regaining freedom will also manage to engage the young generation of Europeans, both from the 'New' and 'Old' Europe" - the Minister said.
The opening speeches were also given by the official representatives of several European countries, including H.E. Mr Peter Weiss, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic; H.E. Mr Edvilas Raudonikis, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania; H.E. Ms Carmen-Liliana Burlacu, Ambassador of Romania to the Czech Republic, as well as H.E. Mr Christoph Israng, Ambassador of Federal Republic of Germany.
A short welcome to the gathered guests was also given by Prof. Jan Rydel from ENRS and Prof. Jiří Máca from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technological University in Prague - partner intitution and host of the exhibition.
The display will remain in Prague till 12 November. Afterwards, it will travel to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to five other locations next year.
