Anniversary of martial law in Poland - light a candle!
32 years ago martial law was imposed in Poland to crush the Solidarity movement. The Institute of National Remembrance invites everyone to light a symbolic candle to the memory of the victims.
The martial law was imposed to crush the Solidarity movement after its legalization as the first independent trade union in the communist bloc the year before and it broke the so-called "carnival of Solidarity" and it delayed any system changes in Poland.
You can join the action by lighting a candle in the window of your appartment or by lighting a virtual freedom candle on the website http://swiatlowolnosci.ipn.gov.pl/
