Prof. Martin Pekár

Professor Martin Pekár is a historian and professor at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. His research lies at the intersection of twentieth-century political, social and urban history, Holocaust studies, and the history of non-democratic regimes in Central Europe. He has published four authored books, including one in English, co-edited volumes with Routledge and Klartext, and numerous studies in several European languages.

Professor Pekár has been actively involved in international research and academic evaluation. He was part of the H2020 urbanHIST project on the history of European urbanism in the 20th century, is currently principal investigator of the ArchAIve project oriented on digital transformation of archives and represents UPJŠ in the DIGITAL-funded EURIDICE project focused on education for digital society. He serves on ERC evaluation panels, is general editor of The City and History, and is a member of the boards and editorial bodies of several scholarly institutions and journals.

His teaching and public engagement focus in particular on modern Slovak history, the Holocaust, historical memory, and the role of history and history education in contemporary society. He has organised international scholarly conferences, supervised doctoral and postdoctoral research, and has also held senior university leadership positions, including Vice-Rector for Higher Education.
