How are today’s overlapping crises reshaping the way Europe is understood and discussed?
On 5–6 March 2026, the B-SHAPES/NARDIV Conference: Narratives of Europe in Uncertain Times will bring together scholars, PhD students, and policymakers in Warsaw to explore how borders, identities, and stories influence perceptions of Europe today.
Brexit, migration, the pandemic, rising populism, and the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have revived cultural divisions and challenged shared ideas of “Europeanism.” The conference engages with these developments by examining narratives emerging in border regions, national and local contexts, and trans-European debates.
Key themes include Euroscepticism in borderlands, minority experiences, border landscapes as cultural heritage, colonial and postcolonial perspectives, and the role of narratives as a methodological tool in European, Regional, and Border Studies. Researchers working on European identity, integration, heritage, or regional dynamics will find the event an important space for exchange across disciplines.

About the B-SHAPES Project
B-SHAPES: Borders shaping European Societies investigates how borders affect our understanding of society, culture, heritage, and belonging in Europe, especially amid increasing re-bordering dynamics. The project brings a unique lens to policy development by connecting border studies with cultural and social research.
