Babi Yar Massacre

Ten days after the occupation of Kiev started, the Jewish inhabitants of the city were ordered to gather on the morning of 29 September 1941. The day coincided with Yom Kippur.

At 8 a.m. the Kiev Jews came to the corner of Melnikova and Dokhterivskaya streets. There they were forced to hand over their documents and valuables to the Germans, after which everyone had to undress and walk towards the ravine Babi Yar in groups. At the edge of the ravine, the groups were made to line up to be shot by machine guns.

According to the Einsatzgruppe C reports, 33 771 Jews were killed in Babi Yar over the course of two days, 29 and 30 September.

In the months that followed, thousands more were seized and taken to Babi Yar to be shot. Apart from Jews, those executed included also Soviet POWs, resistance fighters, communists and gypsies, as well as Ukranian nationalists. The total number of victims is estimated between 70 000 to 100 000.
