The exhibition Between Life and Death. Stories of Rescue during the Holocaust is currently on display at the Pilecki Institute in New York City, running from 25 August to 29 October 2026. The exhibition will be accompanied by two special events, both taking place at the Pilecki Institute.
The exhibition pays tribute to those who, at the risk of imprisonment, deportation or death, chose to help persecuted Jews during the Second World War. Bringing together the stories of rescuers and survivors from fifteen European countries, it places each account within its broader historical context, showing how local circumstances shaped both the possibilities for rescue and the chances of survival. A dedicated panel is devoted to the diplomats from Poland, Japan, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark whose efforts to save Jews took place across Germany, France, Hungary, Lithuania and Switzerland.
Accompanying events
On 9 September 2026, at 6PM, the seminar Memory in Transition: A Transatlantic Perspective on Holocaust Education brings together experts from Europe, Israel and the United States to discuss Holocaust remembrance and education today. More information here.
On 10 September 2026, at 6PM, Holocaust survivor Eva Paddock shares her story of escaping occupied Europe on a Kindertransport in 1939, alongside a presentation of Sound in the Silence, an educational programme developed by ENRS. More information here.

Between Life and Death is a joint project of ENRS, the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Silent Heroes Memorial Centre. First presented at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels in January 2018, it has since travelled to numerous cities across Europe and Japan, including Amsterdam, Bratislava, Vilnius, Budapest, Bucharest, Bern, Dresden, Osaka, Yokohama, Tsuruga, Gifu, Szczecin, Gdańsk, Strasbourg, Bad Ischl and Dublin.
