On 16 November 1976, the GDR revoked the citizenship of the East German poet and singer Wolf Biermann when he was on tour in the FRG, to prevent him from returning to the GDR. A letter of protest to the authorities was signed by over 100 GDR writers and artists, some of whom were then persecuted.
