Call for Applications: Freedom of Speech Beyond Borders
Imagine a world where sharing your opinion could land you in jail—how far would you go to speak your truth? This was the everyday dilemma for dissidents in Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War, and it’s a question that still resonates today.

Join Freedom of Speech Beyond Borders—an interdisciplinary educational project exploring censorship, underground publishing, and human rights.

From 1 to 10 September 2025, selected participants will travel to Bremen or Prague for study visits to key archives, followed by a creative workshop in Maisons-Laffitte, near Paris, where they will collaborate and explore these themes in a hands-on setting.

Participants will gain hands-on research experience in historical archives, interview former dissidents and human rights activists, and participate in creative workshops on zine-making, writing, and collage. Additionally, you'll deepen your understanding of Cold War underground publishing (samizdat and tamizdat) and their vital role in the fight for free speech.

‘This project is open to students in the humanities, social sciences, and arts, as well as young journalists, writers, photographers, and human rights activists who are passionate about these important issues and eager to learn more.
