Call for Applications: Sound in the Silence 2024!

Teachers from all European countries can now apply to take part in a unique project for secondary school students, based on a cutting-edge formula of combining visits to memory sites, on-site history learning and processing the past through art. The recruitment for this year’s edition of Sound in the Silence, organised by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS) and local partners in Romania, is now open. The deadline for applications is 5 May 2024.

This year, on 5 -13 October 2024, four groups composed of one teacher and seven students each, will first meet in Bucharest, where they will learn about the Romanian 20th-century history, including the First and the Second World Wars, the communist period and the Ceaușescu era. After this, they will move to the former prison in Pitești, which was a scene of one of the most cruel ‘reeducation’ experiment in the modern world, carried out between 1949 and 1951. Drawing on their reflections and emotional reactions to what they will have learned there, young people will work together with professional artists to create a performance based on movement, sound and creative writing.

The programme's artistic director and rap/creative writing workshop leader will be Dan Wolf, a hip-hop artist and author of numerous music and theatre projects in the US and Europe. The movement and choreography workshops will be led by choreographer and dancer Katarina Rampackova (Slovakia). Sean Palmer, a performer, musician and composer from the UK will teach sound and musicality. Tetiana Kriukovska (Ukraine), a facilitator and trainer specialised in moderation and intercultural dialogue, will be responsible for group dynamics and integration. We invite humanities teachers, such as history, ethics, civic education, English and national languages!
