Call for Applications: Sound in the Silence 2026

Teachers from countries within the European Union can now apply to take part in a unique project for secondary school students, based on a cutting-edge formula of combining visits to memory sites, on-site history learning and processing the past through art. The recruitment for this year's edition of Sound in the Silence, organised by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS) and local partners, is now open.
The deadline for applications is 3 May 2026.

The 2026 edition of Sound in the Silence (3–11 October 2026) will take place in Gernika, Spain, exploring the history of the bombing of the town on 26 April 1937 and the broader context of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).

The bombing of Gernika, carried out by German and Italian forces in support of Franco's Nationalist forces, became one of the most symbolic and devastating attacks on civilians in 20th-century Europe. The destruction of the town and the suffering of its inhabitants resonated far beyond Spain, marking a turning point in the perception of modern warfare and foreshadowing the atrocities of the Second World War. At the same time, the attack was immediately surrounded by disinformation, most notably the false narrative that the town had been burned by its own inhabitants, making it a powerful case study in propaganda and historical memory.

This edition of the project will place the experiences of civilians at its heart: those who endured violence, loss, displacement, and fear. Through artistic expression, participants will engage with the history of Gernika, reflecting on themes of memory, resilience, and the lasting impact of conflict on individuals and communities.

The programme's artistic director and rap/creative writing workshop leader will be Dan Wolf, a hip-hop artist and author of numerous music and theatre projects in the US and Europe. The movement and choreography workshops will be led by choreographer and dancer Kat Rampackova. Sean Palmer, a performer, musician and composer, will teach sound and musicality.
