Creation of East Germany (GDR)

On 7 October 1949, the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED – Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands; often known in English as East German Communist Party) established the German Democratic Republic – GDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, also known as the East Germany) and adopted its constitution. The new state was governed by SED until its dissolution in 1989.
