Milan Rastislav Štefánik was an outstanding astronomer, military pilot and military general in the French Army.

He contributed greatly to Czechoslovak sovereignty after the First World War, along with the country's first president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk.

He died in a plane crash near Bratislava in 1919, just a few months after Czechoslovak independence was declared.
