End of the Spanish Civil War

On 1 April 1939, Franco signed the last war dispatch: “La guerra ha terminado” ([The Spanish Civil] War has finished).

On 28 March 1939, some 200.000 Nationalist troops entered Madrid without resistance. The Republican government had already fled to France some weeks earlier and what remained of Republican Spanish site surrendered. Franco’s dictatorship began and would last until his death on 20 November 1975.
