On 25 June 2025, we gathered at the Royal Castle in Warsaw to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS). This evening was not only a celebration of our collective achievements but also a reaffirmation of our shared mission: fostering international dialogue about the complex history of 20th-century Europe.
The evening began with welcome notes from distinguished representatives of ENRS member states and partner countries. Hanna Wróblewska, Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, opened the ceremony with a speech reflecting on the founding mission of the Network and the value of cross-border cooperation. She was joined by Dr Zoltán Maruzsa, State Secretary for Public Education from the Ministry of Interior of Hungary; Prof. Mattias Weber, German coordinator and Deputy Chairman of the ENRS Steering Committee; Dr Florin Abraham, Romanian coordinator and Steering Committee Member; and Dr Jerguš Sivoš, Slovak coordinator and Steering Committee Member. Further welcome notes came from H.E. Mr Břetislav Dančák, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Poland; Dr Ingrida Veliutė, Vice Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania; and Dr Anastasia Bondar, Vice Minister of Culture and Strategic Communication of Ukraine. The evening was moderated by ENRS Director Rafał Rogulski.
A insightful keynote address by historian Dr Keith Lowe followed, highlighting the role of memory in shaping Europe’s present and future.
One of the evening’s most emotional moments came during the decoration ceremony, when five long-time ENRS collaborators were honoured for their outstanding dedication and contribution to cultural dialogue. The Polish badge of honour ”Zasłużony dla Kultury Polskiej” was awarded to Iga Raczyńska, Joanna Orłoś, Dr Małgorzata Pakier, Beata Drzazga, and Agnieszka Mazur-Olczak. Their work over the years has significantly shaped the direction and impact of the Network.
The celebrations concluded with a piano concert by maestro Waldemar Malicki, joined by cellist Małgorzata Krzyżanowicz, followed by a festive reception in the grand halls of the Royal Castle.
Over the past 20 years, ENRS has brought together more than 500 institutions from 40 countries to reflect on Europe’s 20th-century past through conferences, exhibitions, educational programmes, and artistic initiatives. We are proud of the shared space we have created - a space for many voices and perspectives, united by a commitment to remembrance and solidarity.
As we celebrate this milestone, we express our deepest gratitude to all those who have walked this path with us. Together, we continue to build a culture of memory grounded in openness, and mutual understanding.
