Educators and history teachers are invited to a free webinar exploring how to teach the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime, taking place on Tuesday, 20 October 2026 at 17:00 CET. The session will be held in English and is free of charge.
The webinar approaches this period of Spanish history through two powerful lenses: the bombing of Gernika and the indoctrination of children and young people under Franco.
In 1937, Gernika was bombed by Nazi Germany's Condor Legion and Fascist Italian aircraft in support of Franco's Nationalist forces, an attack that became an international symbol of violence against civilians and of modern warfare. Following the Nationalist victory, Franco's regime made the education of children and young people a priority, using schools and organisations such as the Frente de Juventudes (Youth Front) to instil obedience, discipline, nationalism and loyalty to the regime.
Studying this period raises difficult but important questions about the conditions that lead to war, youth involvement and indoctrination, and the path to peace, questions participants will be invited to consider alongside the history of their own countries.

What participants will receive
Attendees will learn how to use free, ready-to-use teaching materials on the Spanish Civil War and Francoist Spain, including historical cartoons, photographs, contemporary media reports, an interactive worksheet, and personal stories and testimonies. The resources are designed to support classroom discussion and help students analyse historical sources from multiple perspectives.
Sound in the Silence
The webinar will also introduce Sound in the Silence, ENRS's international educational project bringing young people together to explore difficult chapters of European history through art, music and dialogue. The 2026 edition takes place in Gernika.
Speakers
The session will be led by representatives of the Gernika Peace Museum, Ruta al Exilio, and the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity, and will close with a live Q&A.
