Russia’s Hybrid War against the Democratic World. A Challenge for European Remembrance Policy - conference in Prague

Rafał Rogulski, The Director of ENRS, will take part in the international conference 'Russia’s Hybrid War against the Democratic World. A Challenge for European Remembrance Policy' to be held in Prague on 16-18 November 2022. The event is organised by the Platform of European Memory and Conscience and co-organised by the Office of the Czech Government of the Czech Republic, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Twentieth Century Memorial Museum, under the auspices of the Government of the Czech Republic during the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Rafał Rogulski will attend the third session of the conference (17th November at 4.30 pm) on Communist experience in the European remembrance perspective, with participation of prof. Antoine Arjakovsky (FR) from Collège des Bernardins (Chair), prof. Stéphane Courtois (FR), historian, author of the Black Book of Communism, prof. Gabriel Andreescu (RO), University of the West, Timișoara and Marek Mutor (PL), President of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience.

The aim of the conference is to reflect on the current threats of Russia with a closer look at the area of abuse and falsification of 20th century history, creation of myths, etc. as a tool of disinformation in the current military invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine and as a challenge to the international community in the field of memory policy. The conference is a good complement to the priorities of the Czech Presidency, especially the 5th area – the resilience of democratic institutions, to which memory institutions undoubtedly belong.

The conference will try to summarize and describe the mechanisms of Russia’s information warfare against the backdrop of historical experiences and parallels. The speakers and audience will look for best-practices in improving collective security in the area of memory policy, as well as ways to strengthen the position of memory institutions and continuously improve the resilience of democratic institutions to modern threats.
