Letter from the Polish Roman Catholic bishops to their German peers offering forgiveness and asking for forgiveness was officially sent on 18 November 1965. The letter is acknowledged as one of the milestones in the history of Polish-German reconciliation. 36 bishops who signed the letter, asked for cooperation declaring: “We forgive and ask for forgiveness”. This "Message of Reconciliation" was initiated by Archbishop Bolesław Kominek and he was one of its foremost co-authors, along with Primate Stefan Wyszyński and Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II.
