The first, since the end of Second World War, partially free legislative elections in Poland took place on 4 June 1989. The elections were held on the principles agreed during the Round Table: 65% of the seats in Sejm were reserved for members of the Communist Party and its satellite parties, but they also could contest for the remaining 35%. As a result, the Solidarity candidates gained 161 out of 161 seats in Sejm and 99 out of 100 seats in Senate. These elections were crucial to the fall of communist regime and the birth of the Polish Third Republic.
