The uprising started on 16 December in Timișoara, and soon spread to other cities, including Bucharest. The civil unrest resulted in overthrowing and subsequent execution of Romania's communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu on 25 December.

Romania was the only Eastern Block country in which the Revolution of 1989 turned violent, with over 1100 causalties.
