Romanian Revolution: Capture of Ceausescu

On 25 December 1989, Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife, Elena, were captured while trying to escape and shot after a hasty trial before a military court in Târgoviște. Ion Iliescu, allied with the mostly reformist and communist National Salvation Front, was elected provisional president, and Petre Roman became the prime minister.
