The Constitution of the Slovak Republic was passed on 1 September 1992 by the Slovak National Council and became effective a month later, on 1 October. This, de facto, meant the establishment of the Slovak Republic as a sovereign and democratic country; though officially the federation of Czechs and Slovaks ended only at the end of the year, at midnight of 31 December.
The day when the Constitution was adopted is celebrated in Slovakia as the Constitution Day.
