On 4 June 1920, in the Trianon Palace, near Paris, Hungary signed the peace treaty with the Allied and Associated Powers. Hungarian territory was reduced to less than one-third (32,6%) of its former property, and it lost almost 60% of its population. In addition, Hungary had to pay war reparations to its neighbours. For many Hungarians the Treaty of Trianon remains a symbol of national tragedy.
