Do you get tired of looking at war?
On city streets, the signs of conflict are everywhere: monuments to soldiers, plaques for civilian victims, propaganda billboards, news photos from the front lines, viral war memes. These images surround us, often blurring the lines between history, media, and memory.
The 80th anniversary of the end of World War II is a moment to reflect on what images of war we see every day and whether they talk about the past - and the present - in a responsible, accurate and important way.
We invite you to explore these questions at the event To Understand Memory Between Genres: The Image of War.
Our guests will be:
• Keith Lowe, historian and author of Prisoners of History, which examines how monuments across Europe reflect postwar memory.
• Tomasz Szerszeń, essayist and author of Being a Guest in a Catastrophe, an exploration of the visual narratives emerging from the war in Ukraine.
Date & Time: 26 June 2025, 6:00 p.m.
Location: Dom w Alejach, Warsaw
The meeting will be held in English with simultaneous Polish translation and broadcast online on the ENRS Facebook account.
Join us for this conversation on the images of war - what they reveal, what they conceal, and how they continue to shape our collective memory.
