Prof. Arnold Suppan is former (2021-2022) Vice-President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, former (2011-2013) Secretary General of the ÖAW, former (1988-2002) Chairman of the Austrian Institute of East and South-East European Studies. Prof. A. Suppan, born in 1945 in St. Veit/Glan in Carinthia, studied History and German Studies at the University of Vienna. After receiving his doctorate in 1970, he worked first as a university assistant, after habilitation as a university lecturer, and from 1994 as a university professor at the Institute for Eastern European History at the University of Vienna. Between 1995 and 2015 he also worked as a visiting professor at the universities of Leiden, Fribourg, Stanford and Budapest. In 2009-2011 he was Secretary General, 2011-2013 and 2021/22 Vice President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Prof. A. Suppan is the author of 10 monographs, editor of more than 40 anthologies and editions and author of 280 scientific articles.
