    In Between? Seminar 2017

We have the pleasure to announce that the "In Between?" seminar summarising this year's edition of the project will take place at Topography of Terror in Berlin, Germany between 9 and 10 December 2017.

The interest in local history and individual life stories has been on the rise in the last decades. And while almost all agree it is a way to diversify and complement grand historical narrations, the issue remains: to what end. Is oral history a tool of identity formation and empowerment or contestation and – potentially – conflict ignition? How can and should it be used by researchers, but also journalists, artists, project managers?

These and other questions about oral history, its possible applications, results and methods, are the starting point for the seminar "Individuals – Stories – History" summarizing the 2017 edition of the In Between? project. The two-day event will include presentations from study visits at 8 borderland sites: Berlin, Catalonia, Mostar, Prespa, Vojvodina, as well as Albanian-Montenegrin, Hungarian-Romanian and Polish-Lithuanian border regions. The presentations will be accompanied by an opening lectures and two discussion on curating memory and engaging with local history. Their aim will be to juxtapose perspectives of representatives of different fields dealing with oral history, and to show various ways in which qualitative research methods are being translated into cultural and academic projects.
