Study Visits to the European Borderlands and Professional Podcast Making – Study Visits to the European Borderlands and Professional Podcast Making – the ENRS Announces a Call for Applications for the 'In Between?' Summer School
The borderlands of contemporary Europe share a unique culture of memory, shaped by the turbulent history of the 20th century: its wars, geopolitical changes and mass migrations. It is in such regions that the European Remembrance and Solidarity Network organises, for the eighth time, the 'In Between? Searching for Local Histories in Borderlands of Europe' summer school. We invite students of the arts and humanities from all over Europe to participate in the project. This year the participants of 'In Between?' will meet in Warsaw and subsequently set off on study visits to Alsace, Friuli Venezia Giulia or Cieszyn Silesia, where they will interview members of the local communities and produce a series of podcasts. Applications can be submitted up until 24 April 2022.
This year’s edition will take place from 6 to 16 July 2022 and will start with a three days of training in Warsaw. The programme will consist of lectures in anthropology and oral history, along with workshops on podcast creation and production. After the workshop, participants will be split into three groups and each will travel to one of the German-French, Slovenian-Italian or Czech-Polish borderland regions. During the week-long study trips, the groups will gather knowledge of the history and unique characteristics of the visited regions, taking part in tours, meeting local experts and interviewing inhabitants. The students will present the results of their research in the form of podcasts (results from the 2021 edition are available on the ENRS website: enrs.eu/edition/in-between-2021).
We welcome applications from students of the arts and humanities, such as anthropology, ethnography, journalism, history, cultural studies, sociology and the like. Applicants are requested to fill in the application form. A good command of English is a must and knowledge of one of the languages of the selected regions will be an advantage. The deadline for applications is 24 April 2022. Workshops, accommodation and transport to the study visits’ destinations are free of charge; the participants will have to cover only the travel to Warsaw and their return home.
Each team will gather materials documenting personal experiences of the inhabitants of the multi-ethnic borderlands and create a short artistic podcast, which depicts the atmosphere and history of the region with the help of sound. The 2022 edition marks the start of a three-year long programme by the ENRS dedicated to migration in Europe. The interviews will become an integral part of an educational package that is planned for 2025. The podcasts will be shared in the ENRS’s multimedia library and on the streaming platforms Spotify and Simplecast.
'In Between? Searching for Local Histories in Borderlands of Europe' took place for the first time in 2016. Since then, the project has been repeated every year, each time in a different part of Europe. In 2018 'In Between?' received a special mention by the organisation Europa Nostra.
