Senior research fellow at the Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, formerly (1998-2017) director of the Institute. His original research focus was medieval and Byzantine history. Since the early 1990s, his research has focused on the modern history of Czechoslovakia and Central Europe, and the history of the Cold War.
Tůma is an observer member of the ENRS Academic Council.
